Sharks Crowned 2016 Play-Off Champions at The O2

7 May 2016

On a dramatic night at The O2 Arena, the Sheffield Sharks produced one of the most memorable performances in club history to defeat the Leicester Riders 84–77 and capture the 2016 BBL Play-Off Championship.

Facing a Leicester side that had already secured both the League title and the Trophy during a dominant season, the Sharks entered the Final as underdogs. But what unfolded in front of thousands of fans in London became a story of resilience, belief, and a team peaking at exactly the right moment.

A Battle Between Heavyweights

The Final immediately lived up to its billing.

Leicester edged the opening quarter 22–18 despite looking unusually untidy by their own high standards. The Riders’ quality still shone through, with Neal Watson and Conner Washington helping control the early stages.

But Sheffield responded emphatically in the second quarter.

The Sharks caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down six three-pointers in a devastating offensive burst. Kyle Odister drained three huge triples, while John Barber added two more as Sheffield surged into a narrow 44–43 halftime lead.

Every possession carried enormous intensity as the two rivals traded momentum throughout the third quarter. Leicester looked to have seized control late in the period, finishing with a 10–0 run to move ahead 66–59 entering the final ten minutes.

For many teams, facing the league champions with a seven-point deficit at The O2 would have been too much.

Not this Sharks team.

The Championship Run

The fourth quarter became one of the defining stretches in Sheffield Sharks history.

When Tyler Bernardini knocked down a three-pointer with just over six minutes remaining, Leicester led 71–66 and appeared to have one hand on the trophy.

Then everything changed.

The Riders suddenly went ice cold.

For almost five-and-a-half minutes, Leicester failed to score a single point as the Sharks produced a stunning 14–0 run that completely transformed the Final.

Jerrold Brooks sparked the comeback with five straight points to put Sheffield back in front at 73–71, while the Sharks defence tightened possession after possession.

At the heart of it all was captain Mike Tuck.

Leading by example on the biggest stage in British basketball, Tuck delivered a masterful performance, finishing with 20 points and earning Play-Off Final MVP honours. Brooks added 18 crucial points as Sheffield closed out the game with composure and confidence.

As the final buzzer sounded on an 84–77 victory, Sharks players and supporters erupted in celebration.

The club had secured its first Play-Off Championship in 12 years.

“I Couldn’t Be More Proud”

After the game, MVP Mike Tuck reflected on the journey the team had taken throughout a difficult and emotional season:

“I couldn't be more proud of our guys — we've had such an up and down season with changes of players and losing guys to injuries — to fight all the way through the post-season to win the biggest competition of the year on the biggest stage in British basketball.”

Leicester Head Coach Rob Paternostro acknowledged the quality Sheffield possessed despite the underdog narrative surrounding the Sharks:

“I thought it was quite comical that they were playing the underdog role because everyone in the league knew how good this team was.”

A Night to Remember

The 2016 Play-Off Final victory remains one of the defining achievements in Sheffield Sharks history.

Against the league’s dominant force, on the grandest stage British basketball had to offer, the Sharks delivered a championship performance built on heart, resilience, and belief.

For the players, coaches, and supporters who made the journey to London, it was a night they would never forget.
